How to Replace An Air Conditioner Filter

Apr. 25, 2017
The Orlando heat is only getting worst as summer comes along, and that means now is the time to start preparing your air conditioner. You can start with the simple task of changing your air conditioner’s filter. This will not only help your air conditioner to run more efficiently, but it will also help remove dust and allergens from your home.

Follow these steps to replace your filter.
  • 1.Find where your air filter is located
First, look behind your home’s main air vent that let’s cool air out.  If you can’t find it there, look for a vent around your home’s thermostat. Once you find the filter, make sure no air is passing through before your remove it.
  • 2.Check the filter type
There are different types of filters. Some are called fiberglass, pleated or media filters. The filters should be maintained in different ways, depending on which one you have. • 3.Installation
Once you find the right filter, go ahead and install it. Look for an arrow on the filter and slide it into place in that direction. Lock the gate and turn your air conditioner back on.

If you have a window air conditioner unit, here’s how to clean the filter.
  • 1.Turn it off
Once you are at your window air conditioning unit, turn it off and find the filter.
  • 2.Remove and clean
Lightly tap the filter against the ground or something hard. This will help shake the dirt and debris off.
  • 3.Wipe it down
Take a damp cloth and just wipe it down. This will also help remove some dirt and debris from the filter. Make sure the filter is completely dried before placing it back in the air conditioner.
  • 4.Place the filter
Put the filter, following the arrow, back into your window unit. It should be working properly again.
Remember, how often you change your unit’s filter depends on the filter type. However, for window units, filters should be replaced every year, and cleaned every month.
