You can start with the simple task of changing your air conditioner’s filter. This will not only help your air conditioner to run more efficiently, but it will also help remove dust and allergens from your home.

Follow these steps to replace your filter.

  1. Find where your air filter is located
    First, look behind your home’s main air vent that let’s cool air out.  If you can’t find it there, look for a vent around your home’s thermostat. Once you find the filter, make sure no air is passing through before your remove it.
  2. Check the filter type
    There are different types of filters. Some are called fiberglass, pleated or media filters. The filters should be maintained in different ways, depending on which one you have.   3. Installation
    Once you find the right filter, go ahead and install it. Look for an arrow on the filter and slide it into place in that direction. Lock the gate and turn your air conditioner back on.

If you have a window air conditioner unit, here’s how to clean the filter.

  1. Turn it off
    Once you are at your window air conditioning unit, turn it off and find the filter.
  2. Remove and clean
    Lightly tap the filter against the ground or something hard. This will help shake the dirt and debris off.
  3. Wipe it down
    Take a damp cloth and just wipe it down. This will also help remove some dirt and debris from the filter. Make sure the filter is completely dried before placing it back in the air conditioner.
  4. Place the filter
    Put the filter, following the arrow, back into your window unit. It should be working properly again.

Remember, how often you change your unit’s filter depends on the filter type. However, for window units, filters should be replaced every year, and cleaned every month.
