Who wants to deal with HVAC system problems when you’re spending time with your friends and family around the holidays? HVAC problems are no fun and can be very disruptive during the holidays, and you want to be prepared for December weather in Orlando which can run the gamut. To help you avoid disruptions this holiday season, we’ve provided some simple hacks to save you a lot of time and aggravation.
Schedule an HVAC tune-up before the holidays.
Plan ahead and schedule preventative maintenance for your heating system. The holidays are busy enough without having to worry about your HVAC systemfailing. Regular maintenance will keep your system working reliably, efficiently, and safely. This quick and easy task can prevent untimely breakdowns during this cold season and ensures your home will be reliably warm throughout the winter. Maintenance also prevents fire hazards that can result from having dirty HVAC equipment and dust clogs.
Keep your vents clear.
As you’re decorating for the holidays and potentially moving furniture, make sure you don’t cover-up your vents. Covered vents cause your HVAC system to work harder and can cause major issues on your equipment in the long run.
Clear the dust.
Dust is an unfortunate fact of life. It likes to accumulate on surfaces throughout your home, including your HVAC’s duct system. When dust gets redistributed throughout your HVAC system, your visiting guests might be affected by allergy and asthma symptoms. Keep on top of the dust by cleaning your home regularly. You may even want to consider having your duct system cleaned if it’s been a while.
Change your filter.
This is our favorite tip because it’s fast and easy and provides great benefits. (It’s also an easy task to forget!) According to Energystar.gov, you should inspect, clean or change your air filters once a month. Build up from dust and debris will make your HVAC system work harder to provide the same level of comfort and can damage your equipment, leading to early failure. A new filter allows your system to work properly and efficiently while allowing your family to breathe easier!
Adjust your thermostat.
This last one is a no-brainer and can save you money. When you have a house full of guests, adjust your thermostat by a few degrees up or down depending on the temperature outside. If it’s a colder day, you can rely on the body heat from extra guests and the oven most likely being on to naturally elevate the temperature in your home. Adjusting the thermostat a few degrees will save money on utility costs!
